Limca Fresh Ho Jao Ad featuring Sushma Reddy

with 170 comments

{Double click to view larger video}

Agency: O & M (Ogilvy & Mather)

Tagline: Fresh Ho Jao, Lime and Lemoni

Duration: 45 seconds

First seen: October ’08

Ad Message: Reinforcing Limca as a drink synonymous with freshness, giving the brand a more sophisticated feel

Target Audience: High income group (25+ years) [according to my perception]

Frequency: Medium

Description: Opens with a chic-looking couple waiting by their car and the girl (played by Sushma Reddy) looks bored while the guy (played by Niketan Madhok) is on the phone. The guy then offers the girl a bottle of Limca while holding one himself. Next we see the couple taking sips from the bottle of Limca and splashing water at each other from the car, the steps, the tree trunk and the sidewalk. Last shot shows both of them walking hand-in-hand with their empty Limca bottles and looking visibly refreshed after all the splattering around.

[Caution: Strictly opinionated comments follow]

This commercial has been on air for sometime now but ever since it caught my eye (or should I say ears) I had to write about it. There are 3 things that work for this ad – Music, music, music. Yes, a tune so melodious, a set of lyrics so divine and a voice so sweet you could get diabetic just by listening to it, this ad definitely is a treat to the sore ears. The video is well shot with the couple and the foreign locales lending a pretty urbane feel to the whole ad (which is why the glass bottle struck me as an odd-choice!).

This commercial is of course just a blatant re-implementation of the ‘Fresh ho jao’ idea Limca has been using for quite sometime now. In fact, the beginning of the ad seemed quite lame to me and I kept wondering why they looked so bored to begin with? Led me to think that they could have at least shown the couple stuck in a traffic jam, until of course I remembered their previous campaign with Riya Sen. To an extent, the previous one (featuring a gang of youngsters) fares better with respect to target-audience-connect because it is hard to imagine such an affluent couple grabbing a ten rupee Limca bottle (Diet Coke maybe…but Limca bottle woh-bhi-glass-waali…uhh far-fetched).

So, it’s all been there and done before – the ‘sitting in a car equals boredom’ idea, the imaginary water, the splashing, the drenched people and the freshness afterwards. But, the music…well, that alone is what stops you from flicking channels while this one is on air.

Trivia: The composer for this commercial’s track is R. Anandh and it has been sung by Cara Lisa Monteiro of Phir Dekhiye fame. Lyrics of the song go –

“Fuhaarein, bochharein, nazaaare chura lo na, kuch boondein chura lo na; Thaki si zindagi se, ruki si zindagi se, kuch lamhe chura lo na…; Kuch yaddein, aur sapne, apne chura lo na; Ruki si zindagi se, thaki si zindagi se, raftaarein chura lo na…”

  3. Dearest Critic,

    I have long back realized that there is not a single statement that does not have exception but you helped me believe it more.

    Its a beautiful ad. Awesome. Period.

    Objectively speaking you don’t know the objective of the company to air this particular ad. If find out, you can then start evaluating whether the affluent couple should have been shown or not? They should have been sitting on “Luna”, ” Cycle” or a car…. Give yourself a break & drink Limca.

    Audience will simply be awe-struck and won’t find brains to analyze the ad…their brains will completely be engaged in the ad.

    The point of ad is ….. “Refresh your life”…… kuch batien… kuch lamhe chura lo na… kuch boonde chura lo na…. ruki si zindagi se.. thaki si zindagi se.. kuch raftaarein chura lo na…

    This beautiful thought is equally apt for a guy who travels either by a local train or by a Mercedez…..

    I want to define boredom for you… ” Its when you want to be doing something else and stop doing what you are currently doing” …

    Life is not about cars & boredom is not about traffic.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….Humble apologies, If you found anything offensive here.

  4. Nice post!

    I clicked on the ‘Comments’ link on your page to put up my 2 cents about the ad analysis but then came across another reader’s thoughts about your post – which I realized required more (and immediate) attention!

    1. “Objectively speaking you don’t know the objective of the company to air this particular ad. If find out, you can then start evaluating whether…”

    I think an AD is the best way (or probably the only way) for a company to communicate its objective to the people. So, whatever is communicated to the people becomes the company’s objective – whether it was intentional or not is a different story!

    2. “Audience will simply be awe-struck and won’t find brains to analyze the ad…”

    I will admit that my dumb mind was actually awe-struck the first time I saw this AD (given the fact that I had not watched its prequel before). But fortunately, it (the same dumb mind) started working (and really hard) the next time I saw the AD. And I don’t think even a small number of its grey cells got really refreshed!

    3. “This beautiful thought is equally apt for a guy who travels either by a local train or by a Mercedez….. ”

    Oh, thanks for clarifying. Although a common man (’aam aadmi’ to be precise) like me might not be able to decipher this simple thing. The Ad’s creative team could actually have shown a Luna, a local train, or a cycle to make it louder that Limca is interested in us (common people) as well.

    Thanks.

  5. @Bharat: First things first, No offense taken. You are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

    But as for your comment that “Audience will simply be awe-struck and won’t find brains to analyze the ad” I have to disagree. Someone (coincidentally it was Ad Guru David Ogilvy from the very same agency that created this ad) once said “The consumer is not an idiot. She is your wife.” So let’s not underestimate our audiences here.

    Now the ad, however beautiful, does have scope for improvement and I am just one of those consumers trying to explore/understand what could have been better. I can agree with your target-audience-connect comment in the sense showing an affluent couple may have certain aspirational appeal to a common man.

    As for the boredom part, I just wanted to highlight that they chose the exact same setting (folks sitting in the car) for their new ad as well and could have given it a new twist.

    Keep your thoughts coming in!

  7. Your review is comprehensive and pertinent. Your blog will most certainly feature on my ‘Blog Watch’ : And thank you for updating me on the singer. And guess what, Phir Dekhiye is one of my current favourites. Like this ad, the lyrics of Phir Dekhiye are simply divine. Simple rhythms and melodies have a unique ability to add more depth to a song. Thank you again! Is it fair to assume that you belong to the advertising industry? If yes, in what capacity?

    Anyway, keep up the good work. Cheers! 😀

    Hey AsMi, could you please check out who sung this jingle?

    I’m glad we finally have some very good ads to watch. Sushma Reddy’s looks are quite appreciative.

  14. very well written and comprehensive blog, i dont find anything wrong with the use of glass bottle, moreover its good that they used glass bottle. first of all taking the visual aspect into consideration a tin can wouldnt suit atall and the plastic bottle would seem too bulky in hand and nobody generally drinks the whole 500ml. Moreover old fashioned glass bottle kind of brings out old memories in most of the people who have grown up drinking it when other brands werent much in competition

    and thanks for the mp3 i desparately needed it

    Its Really Interesting !!!
    i didn’t find another blog like Analyzing the ADs its really creative thought, Keep it up…

    I Have some ideas for you, if u wish keep it

    1.just add a rating widget in the post, so viewers can also have their vote to the AD ,

    2. clearly indicate the download link for the MP3, i really didn’t noticed that link until i seen your message in another blog 😦

    rather than putting a download file image put GET MP3 here clearly and remove all that explanation for downloading the file, it is really mess( i think nowadays all will aware of downloading)

    Hope You take this as +ve 🙂

    February 16, 2009 at 6:03 pm

  49. Great Ad! Superb music! Good Camera movement throughout! But the only thing I thought the creative team missed was a Complete Concept !!! Must say, the ad concept was real good one, but not complete.

    I believe the product being showcased here is for masses irrespective of the sections of the society. A couple being shown in a swanky car, holding a bottle of limca and running all over places, does not convince me of the true picture…well is it possible for all to run with the bottle? The shop owner will hit you like anything.. hehe

    I would have loved to see the ad like this:

    1) A couple coming in a car holding a CAN of Limca and having fun!!!

    2) A rickshaw puller after bearing all the brunt of heat, sweat, dust and pain.. Gulps in a bottle of Limca (this time glass wala bottle)…re-energize and refreshes himself. (after all the lyrics says, thaki ki zindagi si, ruki si zindagi si… may be this will make more sense)

    3) Some street kids who are always best at doing mischief’s, running around with a bottle of Limca (Chhota bottle…300ml I believe) and having time of their life….

    4) A husband and wife, while doing window shopping… likes a stuff… but do not possess the purchasing power to own the product they liked and then the husband buys a limca for her wife and then showcasing the joyous moments….

    probably all these put together in little frames will do more justification to the theme…. no offence to the already created ad… but just thought to share my vision will all you guys..

    The Ad still looks good and the music is awsome!!!!

    Anil Menon

    February 17, 2009 at 2:22 am

    • Anil, very nicely thought of. I think this would have encompassed the whole audience.

      Anyways, a question to all, what about the romantic angle of the theme. Are lovebirds going to drink more limca this summer?

    Fuhaarein, bochharein, nazaaare chura lo na,
    kuch boondein chura lo na;
    Thaki si zindagi se, ruki si zindagi se,
    kuch lamhe chura lo na…;

    Kuch yaddein, aur sapne, apne chura lo na;
    ooo Ruki si zindagi se, thaki si zindagi se,
    raftaarein chura lo na…

    lukka chupi khelti hai,
    bheed mein hazaaron kaliyaan (hazaaron kaliyaan);
    mmmm galiyon mein yun bheed banke,
    chup gayi hain saari khushiyaan (saari….saari khushiyaan);
    Khushiyon ko bula lo na,
    muskaane churalo naaaa…
    sulagti pyaas hai toh,
    machalti pyaas hai toh;
    ek limca churalo na.

    Kuch yaddein, aur sapne, apne chura lo na;
    Ruki si zindagi se, thaki si zindagi se,
    raftaarein chura lo na…”
